About this work
A man's face is turned three-quarters down, brow tightly knit and eyes cast in shadow, an expression of inner torment. A thorn crown wraps his head, strands of matted hair fall around his face, and a red garment is glimpsed at the lower shoulder.
Heavy impasto in ochre, rust and cream is dragged and scraped across the face, set against a cooler ground of teal and grey-green with darker passages framing the head. The rough, agitated texture and dramatic chiaroscuro heighten the sense of suffering, giving the portrait an intense, turbulent feeling.
