About this work
A tall, dark maroon-and-black silhouette shaped like a stylized plant or fan of leaves stands at the left of the composition, its striped orange-and-green fronds set against a woven, striped grey panel on the right. Small red, black and pale stars, dots and X marks are scattered across a pale blue, gridded ground, giving the whole surface a patterned, textile-like rhythm.
Flat shapes and hand-drawn linear patterns replace realistic modeling, with thickly built ridges of paint on the fronds contrasting the thin, scratched lines of the background. The bright, decorative palette of red, blue, green and black and the repeated star motifs create a lively, almost festive surface rather than a conventional still life.
