About this work
Four separate panels each depict a bearded man engaged in prayer: one in profile holding a small object beneath his chin, another with both hands raised in supplication beside his weathered face, a third bowing his head over clasped hands and prayer beads, and a fourth pressing a hand to his cheek in reflection. Skullcaps and dark garments mark them as figures of religious devotion.
A near-monochrome range of browns, ochres and blacks is broken only by strong white highlights on hands, beards and foreheads, built up with rough, energetic brushstrokes that leave much of the canvas in shadow. The heavy chiaroscuro and cropped, close framing lend the four studies an intense, meditative gravity.
