About this work
A head and shoulders fill the frame, the face built from flat planes of blue-grey, green and peach with eyes closed or downcast. The figure wears a pale blue garment over a dark, vertical panel at the throat, and a soft arch of green rises behind the head like a halo against the gold ground.
The mustard-gold background is worked in broad, visible strokes that swirl around the arch, while the face is modelled with simplified, almost mask-like planes of cool and warm colour. The restrained palette and stillness of the pose give the image a quiet, icon-like solemnity.
