About this work
A heavyset older man is shown in close half-length, turned slightly to one side, wearing a soft grey cap, a grey-green jacket and a loosely knotted white scarf. His broad, fleshy face carries a weary, guarded expression, small dark eyes looking past the viewer.
The flesh is modeled in warm ochre and pink over a cool, thickly scumbled white-and-grey ground, the paint applied with visible, confident strokes typical of an academic studio study. Restrained color and firm modeling give the sitter a heavy, solemn presence.
