About this work
A bearded man in a dark robe is shown half-length, head turned and eyes lowered as his right hand lifts toward his chest in a tense gesture of prayer. Long tangled hair frames a furrowed, weathered face set against an indistinct, shadowy backdrop suggestive of foliage.
Warm ochre and umber flesh tones catch a single raking light that models the forehead, cheekbone and hand while the rest of the figure dissolves into near-black shadow and cool blue-grey passages. Thick, visible brushstrokes and impasto highlights build the surface, giving the realism a heavy, tactile weight and a mood of solemn inward suffering.
