About this work
A single robed figure, head covered by a pale cloth, sits half-length with hands clasped together at the chest. He turns his head to gaze into the distance, his weathered, deeply lined face and beard the only strongly lit passage against an otherwise sombre setting of dark drapery and a turbulent, cloud-streaked sky over a shadowed hillside.
Painted in a narrow range of umber, ochre and slate-blue, the figure emerges from near-black shadow through thick, dragged brushwork and scraped highlights. The restrained light falls only on the face and hands, heightening the sense of solitary grief and inner tension.
