About this work
A bearded, barefoot man wrapped in a coarse cloak with a red garment over one shoulder crouches beside a massive stone wall, face lowered in anguish, one hand braced on the ground. To the right a rooster stands alert in the straw as a jug rests in shadow, while a crimson sky holds a pale moon beyond the wall.
Deep umber and black shadow dominates the canvas, broken by warm light on the man's skin and the rooster's feathers, with the red cloak as the one saturated color note. Textured brushwork models the stone and worn fabric, and the dark, low composition creates a mood of guilt and quiet despair in an academic realist manner with strong chiaroscuro.
