About this work
A young man stands frontally, hands tucked in the pockets of a long, double-breasted overcoat cinched with a wide belt, a flat cap on his head and a tie showing at the open collar. He is set against a dark wall marked by a pale, cross-shaped patch of mottled stone; a red apple sits on the ground at his feet and a few gilded leaves drift past on either side.
The palette is restricted to charcoal greys, deep maroon and cool white highlights, with light falling sharply across the coat's folds to model its volume.
