About this work

The composition is built from stacked rectangular panels of differing texture and tone: a cracked grey block at top, a plain taupe band across the middle, small carved-looking tiles at lower left, and a large scratched gold-brown field dominating the lower right. No figures or objects appear; the surface itself, with its seams, cracks and incised lines, is the subject.

Muted greys, taupe and warm ochre gold dominate, worked in thick, textured paint scored with fine crosshatched lines and scattered pockmarks, as though weathered by time. Light catches unevenly across the raised ridges, giving the flat panels real depth and a sense of aged, eroded surface. The effect recalls a fragment of old plaster or masonry, quiet and restrained.
