About this work
The upper two-thirds of the canvas is a scumbled pale beige field marked only by faint scratches and a single circular incision, while the lower third is crossed by a dense band of tangled black and dark umber strokes piling along an implied groundline, like scorched scrub or coiled wire left in a bare field. A small monogram sits at the lower left.
The palette narrows to cream, soot black and rust brown, with thick knotted impasto set against a dry, smoky ground. Coarse, tangled brushwork suggests something charred and windblown, producing a bare, somber atmosphere.
