About this work
Dark, overlapping planes of wall and beam frame a narrow vertical strip of pale light at the centre of the composition, as if looking down a shadowed passage toward a lit opening beyond. A faint circular outline is set into the dark mass at right, echoing a round window or pipe end, while thin diagonal lines cross the surface like scaffolding or brick coursing.
The palette is restricted to near-black, slate gray and warm brown, with the central passage rendered in chalky off-white. Dry, scumbled brushwork and scratched linear marks build a rough, worked surface, and the sharp contrast between the dark mass and the lit gap creates a strong chiaroscuro. The mood is brooding and introspective, reading more as an abstracted architectural fragment than a picturesque view.
