About this work
Two bearded men's faces are drawn in profile, mirrored so they meet nose to nose at the centre of the sheet, eyes open and gazing toward one another. Both heads are built from dense cross-hatched ink lines suggesting curling hair and beards, set against grey wash silhouettes, with a pale pink-and-cream column of light running vertically between them.
The composition is strictly symmetrical, the two heads acting as mirror images divided by a narrow band of warm light. Grey and rust-brown washes sit beneath scratchy, energetic pen strokes, giving the drawing a rough, graphic texture. The confrontation of the two faces creates a quiet, contemplative tension.
