About this work
A head in profile turns slightly downward, one eye and the bridge of the nose caught in fine contour line while the hair behind is rendered as an almost solid mass of tangled black scribble. The jaw and neck are left as bare outline, giving the drawing an unfinished, sketch-like quality.
Ink is used in two registers: a controlled, wiry line for the features and a chaotic, overlapping scrawl for the hair, with a soft grey wash shading one side of the face. The contrast between the calm profile and the frenzied mark-making beside it creates a brooding, contemplative mood.
