About this work
A multi-arched stone bridge crosses the river in the middle distance, its reflection breaking across the water below. Dark, elongated boats are moored along the near bank in the foreground, while a mass of red-leaved foliage arches in from the upper right, framing the view of embankment buildings glowing in the distance.
The whole scene is drenched in a warm orange and rust-red sunset light, with the sky, water and stonework rendered in overlapping washes of amber, coral and ochre. Loose, energetic brushstrokes and thick dabs of pigment blur architectural detail into glowing masses of color. The saturated warmth and dissolving forms give the embankment a dramatic, almost feverish glow.
