About this work

Two pairs of bronze horse statues stand along a balustraded ledge above an arched loggia, with the Gothic spires and pinnacle statues of the basilica's upper facade rising behind them in a pale, hazy sky. Below, dark rounded arches frame the scene, their surfaces streaked with drips of paint running down the stone.

Built from earthy browns, blacks and ochres against a cool grey sky, the composition uses bold, loaded brushstrokes and visible drips to roughen the historic facade. The heavy, dark tonal contrast and gestural handling give the famous monument a weathered, dramatic intensity rather than a polished, picturesque look.
