About this work
A ballerina in a white tutu with a rose corsage kneels among dark foliage in the foreground, eyes closed, one arm arched overhead and the other bent close to her chest, with a sword and blue sash lying on the ground beside her. Behind her a sunlit landscape opens into rolling hills, a river, village rooftops and a turreted hilltop castle, where four more dancers in yellow and coral tutus move across a distant field.
Dark, near-black greenery frames the kneeling figure against the pale, luminous distance; the near tutu is built up with thick ridges of white paint while the landscape is smoothly and finely rendered. The contrast of scale and finish gives the scene a wistful, storybook atmosphere, like a tableau from a romantic ballet.
