About this work
Two women with near-identical faces, one blonde and one silver-haired, wear crescent-shaped golden headdresses topped with lemon slices. Between them stand clay jugs, a tarnished copper samovar with a small flame, and apples and pomegranates on a white cloth. Above, a narrow strip shows a tiny boatman rowing beneath a couple riding a toy-like horse, framed by pale round bubbles.
Golden yellow dominates throughout, warmed by red pomegranates and russet vessels, with smooth modeling on the faces against looser, textured strokes on metal and fruit. The symmetry and floating imagery give the still life a dreamlike, fable-like quality.
