About this work

A barefoot woman in a white robe sits with eyes closed, cheek on her hand, beside a wooden table crowded with oversized chess pieces. Behind her a blue curtain hangs before a round mirror-like opening reflecting bare trees; checkerboard tiles cover the floor, scattered pawns and a broken marble head lie among them, with classical urns and topiary at either side.

Cool blues and pale ivory dominate a smooth, evenly lit surface built from flattened, decorative shapes rather than deep perspective. Crisp outlines and repeated tile and drapery patterns give the scene a still, dreamlike quality, as if the sleeping figure and her giant chessboard exist between a real terrace and an imagined stage.
