About this work
A nude figure stands frontally against a divided background of dark charcoal-black on one side and pale blue-grey on the other, the body rendered from chest to thigh with the head slightly bowed. Facial features and hands dissolve into loose gestures of paint rather than defined form.
Thick impasto in ochre, pink and olive builds the body in broad, slashing strokes, while the background is scraped and layered in cool greys and blacks. The rough, unblended surface and stark tonal contrast give the study an urgent, unfinished intensity, more concerned with mass and light than anatomical detail.
