About this work
A row of leafless trees stretches across the middle distance, their bare branches silhouetted against a pale, clouded sky. Below them a wide field of dry yellow-brown grass fills the foreground, with a solitary horse grazing near the lower right corner and a low farm building barely visible among the trunks.
The palette is limited to greys, ochres and muted violets, built up with thick, visible brushstrokes and dabbed highlights that suggest damp bark and dry stalks rather than describe them in detail. Soft, even light and a lack of shadow give the scene a quiet, subdued late-autumn stillness.
