About this work
Along a canal of acid-green water, a cluster of small boats is moored beside white cottages and a slender lamppost. Leafless trees rise into a pale, hazy sky, their branches sketched in dark, wiry lines, while wooden posts and their reflections punctuate the still surface below.
Muted blue-grey and green tones dominate, built up with soft pastel strokes over an oil ground that blur architecture and foliage into a damp, wintry haze. Diffused light flattens contrasts and softens edges, and the loose, scumbled texture gives the harbor a quiet, melancholic hush.
