About this work
Tall cream-colored grass fills most of the composition, opening at upper right onto a cluster of small lavender-blue flowers set against a dark, rounded mass of shadowed foliage. At lower center a tight group of dark, spiky seed heads rises on thin stalks from a band of rust-colored grass, while faint diagonal white lines at the left edge suggest a fence or railing at the border of the field.
The palette moves from pale cream and grey through ochre to near-black shadow, with lavender and touches of blue providing the only cool color notes. Loose, dry-brushed strokes and soft blurring throughout create a hazy, enclosed atmosphere, part meadow and part garden edge.
