About this work
A flat iron bridge on twin dark pier supports spans the foreground of the composition, crossing a wide river. Beyond it, a dense huddle of embankment buildings and trees forms an unbroken dark mass along the far bank, with a few small lit windows visible; the water below carries pale reflections.
The scene is painted in deep blue-grey and plum tones, with the sky streaked in dusty violet and rose above the black silhouette of the shore. Forms are simplified into broad, smudged shapes with little detail, and the low, glowing light gives the view a hushed, twilight mystery.
