About this work
A wide embankment stretches beneath a darkening violet sky, its continuous facade of townhouses and shuttered windows running the length of the canvas. Behind the rooftops a cathedral's silhouette rises with two slender spires catching the last traces of light, while the still water below holds a faint reflection of the buildings.
Cool blue-violet and grey tones dominate, warmed by soft pink and ochre touches on the spires and lit windows. Oil paint is laid in broad, hazy strokes with pastel accents softening the edges of the architecture, producing a hushed, mysterious dusk mood.
