About this work

A dense meadow of thin grass stalks fills the lower two-thirds of the canvas, scattered with small blue cornflowers and white daisy-like blooms on either side. The upper portion darkens into a deep shadowed mass, suggesting the edge of a wood or evening light behind the grass, with a faint pale gap at the center hinting at a path.

The grass is built from countless scratched white lines dragged over darker underpainting, creating a dry, textured tangle, while the flowers are dabbed on in single strokes of ultramarine and white with small yellow centers. The contrast between the near-black upper field and the pale, busy foreground gives the composition a hushed, mysterious atmosphere, as if seen at dusk.
