About this work
Two young men in overcoats stand shoulder to shoulder in an interior lined with shelves of books and jars, one with arms crossed looking to the side, the other facing forward with a purple scarf at his neck. Behind them a red-toned building with a tower rises through a loosely brushed, almost dissolving backdrop, and open books lie on a ledge in the foreground.
The palette shifts from cool greys and greens in the foreground figures to warm ochres and deep red in the background, applied in broad, dry, scraped strokes that blur architecture and wall into one another. Light falls softly across the faces while the setting remains indistinct, giving the double portrait a quiet, memory-like, contemplative mood.
