About this work
A cluster of monastery buildings, including a tall church with a bell tower and several onion-domed and tented towers with green roofs, sits behind a defensive wall on the far side of an open field. Bare trees stand to the left, and the foreground is a marshy meadow of dry grass streaked with patches of melting snow and dark thawed earth.
The palette is muted and cool, built from soft grays, dusty pinks in the sky, and warm ochre tones in the grass, with the monastery rendered in pale creams and greens. Brushwork is loose and economical, with the architecture summarized in flat, simplified strokes against a hazy sky. The scene reads as a quiet, transitional early-spring day, still and contemplative.
