About this work
The painting looks straight down a broad avenue lined on both sides by tall stone buildings, their windows lit and rooflines silhouetted; a domed corner tower rises above the roofline on the right in the foreground. The street itself is filled with blurred traffic and pedestrians rendered as streaks of light, converging toward a pale horizon under a cloudy sky.
Heavy impasto and rapid palette-knife strokes turn the roadway into a river of molten gold, orange and crimson, contrasting with the cooler greys and blues of the buildings and sky. The steep aerial perspective and smeared, glowing lights give the avenue a restless, nocturnal energy.
