About this work

A single gondola, its bow curving upward, is tied among a row of mooring poles rising from the lagoon. A wooden jetty runs along the right side of the canvas, while a hazy strip of buildings and water stretches across the distant background. The boat sits low and still in calm water close to the pier.

Cool blues and greys in the gondola and water play against warm tan tones in the pilings and dock, with touches of orange suggesting distant rooftops. Loose, loaded strokes describe the reflections and ripples, and the paint is built up thickly on the hull and posts while the background is kept soft and atmospheric. The scene reads as a tranquil, hazy corner of a Venetian waterway.
