About this work
Two men sit together on a stone step before a carved temple facade. The man on the left, in a maroon turban and white tunic, plays a long wind instrument held to his lips. Beside him a second man in a red-patterned headscarf and burgundy shirt strikes a large orange barrel drum strapped across his knees with two sticks.
Warm ochres, whites, and touches of maroon dominate against the pale stone architecture behind them, sunlight raking across the steps to pick out folds of cloth and the drum's fittings. Loose, confident brushwork and strong tonal contrast give the scene an animated, musical energy.
