About this work

A woman in a black top hat, red cropped top and pink-and-white patchwork trousers stands playing a violin, bow drawn across the strings. Beside her a mandolin leans against the wall, and to the right an open case holds a brass instrument in front of a flat grey silhouette of a seated figure in patterned headwear. Painted graffiti letters cover the mustard-colored wall behind her.

The musician is rendered in fairly realistic modeling of skin, fabric and instrument, while the background flattens into a collage of scratched gold ground and stenciled graffiti text. Warm ochres, pinks and reds keep the mood bright, giving the street performance a lively, buoyant energy.
