About this work
Ethnic musical instruments and curios are arranged on a table draped in a blue and gold African-print cloth: a kalimba, a carved wind instrument, maracas, and a red skin-topped drum hang or lean against the wall, while a large spiral shell, a cloth-wrapped doll figure, and a row of tiny brass elephants sit along the table's edge.
Deep ultramarine and ochre dominate the composition, echoed in the geometric motifs stenciled across the backdrop, while the objects themselves are rendered with careful attention to texture -- the drum's taut hide, the shell's ridged spiral, the doll's leaf-patterned wrap. The dense, decorative arrangement and saturated color give the scene a festive, exotic character.
