About this work

A tall copper ewer with an engraved spout and hinged lid stands beside a white ceramic plate propped on its edge, a small brass coffee pot, a whole garlic bulb, and a blue-and-white patterned bowl holding a tomato and a cucumber. The grouping rests on a wooden ledge in front of a rough stone wall, with grass, small white flowers, and touches of yellow lichen growing around the objects.

Warm copper and terracotta tones stand out against the cool grey and ochre stones, painted with loose, textured strokes that render the rock surface almost abstractly. Bright, even outdoor light picks out the metal's sheen and the bowl's glaze, giving the still life a fresh, sunlit, cheerful clarity.
