About this work
A dense, overflowing arrangement of pink and white peonies, red roses, striped tulips, poppies, morning glories and a bird-of-paradise bloom spills from a carved terracotta urn decorated with a ram's head. A hummingbird hovers at upper left, butterflies rest among the petals, and a small mouse, a snail and a scatter of plums and a peach occupy the dark tabletop below.
Rendered in crisp, hyper-detailed realism, every petal, leaf vein and insect wing is picked out with fine, controlled brushwork against a plain warm ochre backdrop. Rich reds, whites and blues against deep shadow give the still life a lush, vibrant, almost theatrical abundance.
