About this work
A red cloth-covered table is heaped with watermelons, a green melon, a marrow, and a basket of apples and pomegranates, plus a plate of fruit and a halved watermelon. Two large sunflowers with drooping brown centers rise from a white jug, flanked by a string of onions and a round tambourine-like disc on the wall, with a patchwork textile hanging behind.
Warm reds dominate the composition, set off by the cool blue and violet patchwork of the hanging cloth and the green stripes of the melons. Paint is applied in thick, confident strokes with strong contrasts of light and shadow. The abundance of shapes and saturated color gives the still life a vibrant, festive feel.
