About this work
Two Rajasthani men sit at rest beside a pair of camels adorned with elaborate red, orange and gold textile trappings and tassels. One man, barefoot in sandals, leans back against a camel's flank; the other, wearing a bright orange turban, sits cross-legged nearby, both shaded by a tree whose dappled light falls across the paved street.
The composition is built on saturated warm color - vermillion, saffron and ochre draperies set against the camels' pale tan hides and the men's white cotton garments. Brushwork is loose and textured, especially in the folded fabrics, while sharp patches of sunlight and shadow model the forms and lend the scene a relaxed, market-day warmth.
