About this work
A calm lake fills the foreground, its glassy surface broken only by pale rocks at right and a dark rock at left, both mirrored in the water. Across the middle distance a pointed rocky outcrop and low tree-covered hills line the far shore, and behind them a large mountain rises into soft grey cloud, its base wrapped in mist.
The palette is built from cool violets, blues and pale pinks, with the mountain and clouds blended softly into one another to suggest morning haze. Reflections in the water are rendered with loose, horizontal strokes echoing the shapes above, while the foreground rocks are picked out with firmer, warmer touches. The overall effect is hushed and serene, a quiet dawn stillness.
