About this work
A dark-robed woman with a pale, downcast face fills the upper part of the composition, one knee raised to support a large luminous white sphere like a moon. Her outstretched hand lets fall a scatter of bright specks over a miniature townscape below: a row of frost-white clipped trees, two tall columns crowned with open flames, and a stone embankment mirrored in still water.
Deep browns and blacks dominate the figure, set off by the chalky white of the moon and trees and small flecks of gold leaf scattered like sparks. Thick, textured paint and a hushed, night-time palette turn the scene into an allegory of midnight watching over a sleeping city, quiet and faintly magical.
