About this work
Five masked heads crowd the canvas in a tight cluster: a pale face ringed by a pink ruffled collar at left, two smaller heads in feathered caps and yellow ruffs at the top, and two darker, more shadowed faces below with beaded or painted mouths. The figures overlap and merge into the busy ground with no clear setting beyond the mass of costumed heads.
Painted in oil with a warm, earthy palette of rust, ochre and gold, the surface is worked with visible brushy strokes and scratched linear marks that outline eyes, ruffs and jewelry. Patches of raw color bleed into one another so the masks seem to dissolve into the ground, creating a restless, feverish carnival atmosphere.
