About this work

Roofless, gutted apartment buildings with empty window sockets flank a bare paved yard, their facades broken by a collapsed archway open to the sky. Three elongated airship or barrage-balloon shapes drift above the ruins, and a small dark form lies motionless on the pavement in the foreground.

Rendered entirely in charcoal-black and bone-white with dense cross-hatching and scored white scratches raking every surface, the composition sets jagged ruined silhouettes against a pale sky. The effect is bleak, desolate, and quietly menacing, like a bombed street after an air raid.
