About this work
Tall, irregular vertical shapes in white, rose-pink, purple and green stand close together like broken columns or shards of masonry, filling most of the canvas. Near the top center, a weathered green panel bears the faint low relief of a face or small figure, its round medallion motif recalling an ancient carving set among the taller pale forms.
Thick, cratered layers of oil and acrylic give every plane a rough, weathered skin, from mottled green patina to smooth white and violet passages, with a flat cobalt sky-like block at the upper right. The heavy impasto, muted earth and jewel tones, and the buried carved motif lend the scene a quiet, mysterious, ruin-like presence rather than a literal view.
