About this work

The dead man lies stretched across the foreground, his torso and legs wrapped in white cloth, wounds visible on his hands and body. Above him three figures lean in mourning: a bearded man, a woman in a dark blue veil, and an older woman in a deep red cloak holding a crown of thorns.

A somber palette of black, ochre and deep red is broken by cool moonlit blue in the sky and the stark white of the shroud. Loose, heavily worked brushstrokes and dramatic contrasts of light and shadow build a charged, grief-laden atmosphere around the scene of lamentation.
