About this work
An arched stone footbridge crosses a canal in the foreground, its balustrade formed from scrolling cast-iron railings that curl into lace-like patterns. Beyond it an embankment lined with tall classical buildings recedes, their façades marked by rows of windows and a columned portico further along the street, under a star-flecked night sky.
Dense linework ranges from the near-black sky and shadowed archway to delicately hatched stonework picked out in pale tones. The ironwork railing is rendered with especially meticulous, looping lines that read almost as embroidery against solid stone, giving the night scene a hushed stillness.
