About this work
A single-arched stone bridge spans a canal in the foreground, its rounded balustrade set with circular and cross motifs. Beyond it a long embankment building rises in tiers, its lower storeys marked by columns and a pedimented entrance, with dormered rooftops silhouetted against a starry sky.
Dense cross-hatching builds a near-black sky and shadowed archway, contrasting with the paler, carefully hatched stonework of the façade. Columns, window frames and roof details stay legible even in deep shade, giving the etching a still, nocturnal calm typical of a canal-side view.
