About this work
The monastery complex at Gegard nestles at the foot of high, banded rock cliffs, its pale stone walls topped by a conical spire and cross. A carved arched portal marks the entrance beside a rounded green bush, with a stone staircase climbing the rock to the left. Small figures in modern dress cross the open paved courtyard and pass through the gateway on the right.
Soft violet-grey and ochre tones model the layered cliff face, contrasting with the warmer cream and beige of the monastery stonework. Diffuse, even daylight flattens the shadows slightly, giving the pastel a hazy, sun-bleached atmosphere. Loose, dabbed strokes suggest the crowd of visitors without individualizing them, lending the scene a quiet, everyday calm.
