About this work
A heavyset, bearded man crouches low, one leg stretched forward and the other bent beneath him, his torso twisted and his head dropped so his matted hair and darkened, wounded-looking face turn away from view. Rendered against an almost empty off-white ground, the figure is isolated with no setting, props, or other figures to place him in a scene.
Loose, smeared strokes model the flesh in soft pinks and ochres, while the head is built up in raw reds, browns and near-black shadow, giving it a bruised, ravaged texture unlike the smoother body beneath. The sparse background and slumped pose concentrate attention on physical suffering and exhaustion.
