About this work

Massive pale stone ramparts and towers of a fortress stretch across the middle distance, with a small church visible within the walls. Below, a village of weathered wooden huts, one blue-painted house, and zigzagging wooden fences sits among autumn trees, with two tiny figures walking a path that winds down through banded fields toward the settlement.

Color is used decoratively rather than naturally: fields striped in pink, lilac, and turquoise, foliage rendered in flat orange and yellow patches, under a heavily textured, cloud-streaked sky. The flattened perspective and pattern-like brushwork give the scene a folk, almost naive stylization, warm and nostalgic in feeling.
