About this work
The composition is arranged in horizontal bands: pale blue-grey mountains along the top, a patchwork of cultivated strips in lavender, green and brown below, two small trees marking a rise in the middle ground, and a dense field of red poppies spread across the bottom edge.
Thick, palette-knife brushwork flattens the fields into simplified, decorative bands of color rather than naturalistic depth, with furrow lines scored through the paint. The bright red of the poppies against cool lavender and green produces a cheerful, patterned, vividly colored landscape.
