About this work
An irregular, light-toned form floats left-of-center against a deep brown ground, its surface covered in crosshatched scratches and fragments of stenciled lettering. A thin, curling line trails off to the right, and a few isolated light flecks are scattered in the upper corners of the sheet.
Warm sepia and deep umber tones fill the ground, with sgraffito-like scratching cutting through the wash to reveal the pale paper beneath. The grainy, toned surface and fine incised drawing give the sheet a quiet, enigmatic feel, like a fragment pulled out of darkness.
